(September 2019) - To celebrate the gold wedding of my parents my sister and I invited them on a 7 day bike trip along the Danube river.

The 350KM tour from Passau on the Austrian - German border to Vienna took me and my family 6 days to complete. Yes, we cheated, we had electric bikes. Although my sister decided to only use the electric motor support in steep hills which there was one, maybe. In general the tour is very easy if you choose an organized tour with luggage transfer from hotel to hotel. There are many operators that organize these tours including rentals bikes and hotel bookings.

This is a photo post, so no more talk and some images from the trip, starting with nature and river shots.

Tiny bike ferries help you to cross the river when bridges are far (@ "Donauschlinge")
In many parts you ride on dedicated bicycle paths away from the main road
Next to the river of course
Plenty of nature in the closed parts of the Danube valley before Linz

Of course this is Austria and most parts of the track are through more developed landscapes, small villages with plenty of old churches castles and monasteries. My favorite part of the tour was through a wine region called "Wachau". This region is known for its whites wines, mainly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. Middle of September we were lucky to catch the end of the grape harvest. Many vineyards offer food and very young wines that are barely fermented. Enough talk, the next set of photos covering towns, cities and landmarks along the way.

The biggest city you will visit before reaching Vienna is Linz

Melk
And the famous monastery of Melk
An almost mandatory night ride on the famous Ferris Wheel from 1897 in Vienna, Prater
Swimming in the "Old Daube" on a hot, late summer day - with some company

That's it. Overall the trip was definitely worth it and even inexperienced riders like myself can easily do it. The tour offers a wide variety of nature, culture, good food and wine, small to big cities. We already made plans to ride along the upper parts of the river, staying only in Germany this time.
